The energy sector operates in environments characterized by extreme temperatures and intense radiation, placing extremely high demands on materials. Silicon carbide composites, due to their superior high-temperature resistance and radiation tolerance, along with their ultra-high-temperature ceramic melting point exceeding 3000°C, high thermal conductivity, and fracture toughness, make them ideal candidate materials for components that must withstand intense heat flux and radiation.
Silicon nitride ceramic bearings have several key advantages over traditional steel bearings: First, they have a lower density, which helps reduce centrifugal stress under high-speed rotation, making them more suitable for the high-speed requirements of new energy vehicle motors; second, they have better wear resistance; third, silicon nitride is a natural electrical insulator, which reduces electro-corrosion caused by bearing discharge, preventing shortened bearing and lubricant lifespan and ultimately bearing failure.
There are various methods to address the brittleness problem in ceramics. At the material level, materials with high fracture toughness, such as zirconium oxide, can be selected. In terms of structural design, stress concentration is reduced by optimizing the geometry (e.g., avoiding sharp angles). In terms of manufacturing processes, higher quality and more consistent powders (high purity, ultrafine, and controllable morphology), as well as advanced sintering technologies such as hot isostatic pressing, are used to improve density and uniformity, thereby enhancing the reliability of the material.
